The Lincoln Cent was introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Designed by Victor David Brenner, it was the first regular issue United States coin to feature the portrait of a historical person.

From 1909 through 1958, Lincoln cents carried the famous Wheat reverse, featuring two wheat stalks surrounding the denomination. During those 50 years, Wheat Cents were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints and saw extensive circulation through major periods of American history, including both World Wars and the Great Depression.
