2000 United States Mint Proof Set 10 Coin Set with 50 State Quarters
This 2000 United States Mint Proof Set contains 10 proof coins produced by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. The set comes in two original display cases and includes the Certificate of Authenticity, specification card, and original outer packaging shown in the photos.
The 2000 set was issued during the early years of the extremely popular 50 State Quarters Program. Launched in 1999, the program introduced five new state quarter designs each year and became one of the most successful coin collecting programs in U.S. history.
The five 2000 State Quarters included are Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia. Each reverse celebrates the history, landmarks, or identity of its respective state.
The other five coins in the set are the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Sacagawea Dollar.
The Sacagawea Dollar makes 2000 especially interesting. This was the first year of issue for the Sacagawea Dollar, which features Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste on the obverse and a soaring eagle on the original reverse. The coin's distinctive golden color comes from its manganese brass clad composition and does not contain gold.
Proof coins are specially manufactured for collectors using polished dies and specially prepared coin blanks. This process produces sharper details and highly reflective surfaces compared with ordinary circulation coins.
All of the coins in this set carry the S mint mark for the San Francisco Mint.
