2000 P Sacagawea Golden Dollar

This 2000 P Sacagawea Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and comes from the very first year of the Sacagawea Dollar series. The coin has a face value of $1 and is presented in the CoinHub holder shown.

The Sacagawea Dollar was introduced in 2000 as a replacement for the Susan B. Anthony Dollar. The U.S. Mint gave the new coin a distinctive golden appearance to make it easier to distinguish from the quarter and other circulating coins. Despite its color, the Sacagawea Dollar contains no gold. It is made with a manganese brass outer layer over a copper core.

The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition during its historic journey across the American West from 1804 to 1806. Her knowledge of the region and ability to communicate with Native American communities made her an important figure associated with the expedition.

The reverse features a soaring bald eagle surrounded by 17 stars. The 17 stars represent the number of states in the United States during the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This original eagle reverse was used on Sacagawea Dollars from 2000 through 2008 before the Native American Dollar program began introducing changing reverse designs.

The 2000 P is especially recognizable to collectors because it represents the inaugural year of the series. Hundreds of millions were produced as the U.S. Mint heavily promoted the new dollar coin for circulation.
