Offered here is a very unusual 1981-D Kennedy Half Dollar that has been hand carved/engraved into a hobo-style art coin.

The obverse retains the recognizable Kennedy portrait, with what appears to be a small “BP” artist mark/stamp added to the portrait.

The reverse has been dramatically altered from the original Kennedy Half Dollar design and features a detailed cartoon-style monkey/ape holding a peeled banana. The carving includes considerable detail in the face, hair, hands and banana.

This is not a U.S. Mint-issued design or mint error. The coin was artistically altered after leaving the Mint and is being offered as a collectible piece of hobo coin art/exonumia.

The identity of the engraver associated with the “BP” marking has not been independently verified, so no specific artist attribution is guaranteed.
