Description

You will receive the exact 1979 Jefferson Nickel shown, certified MS66 Full Steps (FS) by Independent Coin Graders (ICG). According to the 2027 Red Book Price Guide, this coin carries a listed value of $1,150, making it one of the most desirable modern Jefferson Nickels for advanced collectors. At first glance, a 1979 Jefferson Nickel may seem like an ordinary five-cent coin. The reality is far different. While more than 463 million Philadelphia nickels were struck in 1979, only a tiny fraction exhibit the razor-sharp strike required to earn the coveted Full Steps (FS) designation. On Jefferson Nickels, "Full Steps" refers to the complete, uninterrupted steps leading to Monticello on the reverse of the coin. Most examples left the Mint with weakly struck or worn steps, preventing them from receiving this elite designation. To achieve an MS66 FS grade, a coin must not only display exceptional luster and very few imperfections, but it must also have a remarkably strong strike. The combination of a high Mint State grade and Full Steps designation is what transforms an otherwise common-date nickel into a major condition rarity. PCGS notes that only about a dozen examples have been certified at MS66 Full Steps, with none graded finer, illustrating just how elusive these coins are. Designed by Felix Schlag, the obverse features Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence. The reverse showcases Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia estate, with the famous staircase that collectors carefully examine when determining the Full Steps designation.
