1979 D Jefferson Nickel ICG MS66 FS Full Steps

This 1979 D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint and has been professionally graded MS66 FS by ICG. MS66 represents a high grade Mint State coin with strong original quality, while the FS designation stands for Full Steps.

Full Steps is an important designation for Jefferson Nickel collectors. It refers to the horizontal steps at the base of Monticello on the reverse being sufficiently complete and well defined. These tiny lines are often weakly struck or damaged by contact with other coins, making high grade Jefferson Nickels with Full Steps considerably more challenging than ordinary examples.

The Jefferson Nickel series began in 1938, replacing the Buffalo Nickel. Felix Schlag designed the coin, placing a portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and Jefferson's historic Virginia home, Monticello, on the reverse.

Jefferson designed and extensively remodeled Monticello throughout his lifetime. The building became so closely associated with him that it has remained a major feature of the Jefferson Nickel for most of the series' history.

The 1979 D was produced during an era when Jefferson Nickels were heavily made for everyday circulation. Finding an example with excellent preservation and clearly defined Monticello steps is much more difficult than simply finding a circulated 1979 D nickel.
