1959 Lincoln Memorial Cent First Year Issue Gem Uncirculated RD

This 1959 Lincoln Cent represents an important transition in the history of the American penny. It was the first year the Lincoln Memorial reverse appeared on the cent, replacing the famous Wheat reverse that had been used since 1909.

The Lincoln Cent was originally introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. It was the first regularly circulating United States coin to feature an actual historical person.

In 1959, the United States Mint celebrated the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth by introducing a new reverse designed by Frank Gasparro. The design features the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. An interesting detail is that a tiny statue of Lincoln can be seen between the Memorial's columns. Because Lincoln's portrait also appears on the obverse, the coin technically depicts Lincoln on both sides.
