Description

1953C $2 United States Note Red Seal

This is a Series 1953C $2 United States Note featuring Thomas Jefferson on the front and his famous Virginia home, Monticello, on the back. The exact note shown has serial number A75742890A and displays the distinctive red Treasury seal and red serial numbers associated with United States Notes of this era.

The $2 denomination has a long history in American currency. Federal $2 notes date back to the Civil War era, and Thomas Jefferson first appeared on the denomination in the 1860s. The small size design seen here was introduced in 1928 and established the familiar Jefferson and Monticello combination that remained on the $2 bill for decades.

This note belongs to the United States Note series, sometimes called Legal Tender Notes or Red Seal notes by collectors. Unlike today's Federal Reserve Notes, United States Notes were a separate form of government issued paper currency. Their history stretches back to 1862, when the federal government began issuing legal tender paper money during the Civil War.

The Series 1953 $2 design continued the classic Jefferson portrait on the front with an engraved view of Monticello on the reverse. Monticello was Jefferson's home near Charlottesville, Virginia, and its appearance makes this one of the most recognizable backs in classic American currency.

One of the easiest ways to distinguish this note from a modern $2 bill is the red seal. Modern $2 Federal Reserve Notes use green Treasury seals, while this older United States Note carries the striking red seal and matching red serial numbers.
