Description

1953 C $2 United States Red Seal Legal Tender Note

This Series 1953 C $2 United States Note features Thomas Jefferson on the front and his famous Virginia home, Monticello, on the reverse. The note has the distinctive red Treasury seal and red serial numbers associated with United States Notes from this era.

Serial Number: A75030066A

The $2 denomination has a fascinating place in American currency history. The United States has issued $2 notes in various forms since the Civil War era. Despite being a legitimate and useful denomination, $2 bills have historically circulated much less frequently than $1 and $5 bills. This has helped give them a unique reputation among collectors and the general public.

United States Notes, sometimes called Legal Tender Notes, were first authorized during the Civil War in 1862. Unlike today's Federal Reserve Notes, these notes were issued directly as obligations of the United States government. The red seal became one of the most recognizable features of later United States Notes.

The Series 1953 $2 note continued the long tradition of featuring Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson has appeared on the denomination since 1869. The reverse depicts Monticello, the Virginia estate Jefferson designed and called home.

The Series 1953 C was one of the final series of red seal $2 United States Notes before production of the denomination eventually transitioned to the familiar green seal Federal Reserve Note.
