This Series 1953 B $2 United States Note is a classic piece of American currency featuring Thomas Jefferson on the front and his famous Virginia home, Monticello, on the back. The history of the United States Note dates back to the Civil War. In 1862, the federal government began issuing United States Notes to help finance the enormous cost of the war. These notes became popularly known as Greenbacks and represented an important change in American finance because they were issued directly by the United States government.

The $2 denomination itself has an even longer history. Two dollar notes have existed in various forms since the earliest years of American paper money. Thomas Jefferson became closely associated with the denomination, and his portrait has appeared on the front of the $2 note for generations.

The Series 1953 design belongs to an important period in American currency history. By this time, the United States had been using the smaller modern size of paper currency for more than two decades. The note still retained the traditional United States Note format, including its famous red seal.

Because of this transition, older Red Seal $2 notes represent an earlier chapter in the history of American paper currency.
