History of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was issued from 1916 through 1947 and was designed by noted sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. The obverse depicts Liberty walking toward the rising sun with the American flag flowing behind her. She carries branches of laurel and oak, representing civil and military glory. The reverse features an American eagle rising from a mountaintop perch beside a mountain-pine sapling. 

Dated 1942, this silver half dollar comes from the World War II era and represents the type of substantial silver coinage Americans used for everyday commerce during the early 1940s. The Philadelphia Mint produced 47,818,000 circulation-strike examples that year. 

The series ended in 1947 and was replaced by the Franklin Half Dollar in 1948. Weinman’s celebrated Walking Liberty design remained so popular that the United States Mint later adapted it for the obverse of the American Silver Eagle, first issued in 1986.
