History of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was produced from 1916 through 1947 and is widely regarded as one of the most artistic designs in American coinage. Sculptor Adolph A. Weinman created the design as part of a major redesign of United States silver coins during the early 20th century. 

The obverse depicts Liberty walking toward a rising sun while wrapped in the folds of the American flag. She carries branches of laurel and oak, traditionally representing civil and military achievement. The reverse features an American eagle standing on a mountaintop perch beside a mountain-pine sapling. 

Dated 1941, this coin was produced during the year the United States entered World War II. Walking Liberty halves were substantial silver coins used in everyday American commerce, making surviving circulated examples tangible pieces of wartime-era history. Production increased significantly in 1941, with more than 24 million regular-issue examples struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Walking Liberty series ended in 1947. Weinman’s famous obverse design was later selected for the American Silver Eagle program, which began in 1986 and continues to use an adaptation of the historic Walking Liberty artwork.
