Description

1935 E $1 Silver Certificate Blue Seal Note

This Series 1935 E $1 Silver Certificate is a historic piece of United States paper currency featuring George Washington on the front and the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse. This exact note has serial number V57382107G and displays the famous blue Treasury seal that makes Silver Certificates instantly recognizable to collectors.

Silver Certificates trace their history back to 1878. They were created during a period of intense debate over the role of silver and gold in the American monetary system. These notes allowed the public to carry convenient paper currency while the government maintained silver behind the certificates. For many years, a person holding a Silver Certificate could redeem it for silver from the United States Treasury.

The Series 1935 $1 Silver Certificate became one of the most widely recognized Silver Certificate designs in American history. The series remained in production through several different letter varieties, including this 1935 E issue. These notes circulated during an important period that included the Great Depression, World War II and the economic expansion that followed the war.

The front features a portrait of George Washington surrounded by the classic engraved artwork used on American currency. The wording near the bottom reads “In Silver Payable to the Bearer on Demand,” a reminder that this note was originally connected directly to the nation's silver reserves.

The reverse is also historically significant. It features both sides of the Great Seal of the United States. One side shows the American bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows. The other shows an unfinished pyramid topped by the Eye of Providence. This reverse design was introduced on the $1 denomination during the 1930s and became one of the most recognizable designs in American currency.

The United States eventually moved away from silver backed paper currency. Redemption of Silver Certificates for silver dollars ended in 1964, and redemption for silver bullion ended in 1968. Although Silver Certificates can no longer be exchanged for silver, they remain legal tender and are widely collected as reminders of an earlier American monetary system.

This note features the signatures of Treasurer Ivy Baker Priest and Secretary of the Treasury George M. Humphrey.
