History of the Liberty Head Nickel

The Liberty Head Nickel, commonly called the “V Nickel,” was introduced in 1883. Its obverse features a classical portrait of Liberty surrounded by 13 stars, while the reverse displays the Roman numeral “V,” representing five, inside a wreath. The series remained in regular production through 1912 before the Buffalo Nickel replaced it in 1913.

The earliest 1883 version did not include the word “CENTS” on the reverse. Because the coin displayed only a large Roman numeral V, some examples were gold-plated and reportedly passed as five-dollar gold pieces. The Mint added “CENTS” later in 1883, and this 1910 example carries that revised reverse design.

The 1910 issue had a large production of just over 30 million coins. PCGS notes that the date is generally well struck compared with many other Liberty Nickels, though some examples display weakness on the obverse stars.

This is genuine United States legal-tender coinage with an official denomination of five cents. Its collectible value is based on its age, condition, toning and numismatic appeal rather than its denomination.

Please review all photos carefully for the coin’s color, wear and surface characteristics. The handwritten “XF” and “toned” notations on the holder are not third-party grading-service certifications and are not guaranteed.
