History of the Barber Half Dollar

The Barber Half Dollar was produced from 1892 through 1915 and was named for its designer, Charles E. Barber, who served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Barber also designed the matching dime and quarter used during the same era.

The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath and headband inscribed “LIBERTY.” Thirteen stars surround the portrait to represent the original colonies. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, symbols traditionally associated with peace and military preparedness.

Barber coinage replaced the long-running Liberty Seated designs beginning in 1892. These substantial silver half dollars circulated extensively during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many surviving examples display considerable wear from everyday commerce. The Barber Half Dollar was eventually replaced by the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1916.

The 1909 Philadelphia issue had a reported mintage of 2,368,000 coins. Because Philadelphia coins of this period did not carry a mintmark, the absence of a mintmark is correct for this issue.

This is genuine United States legal-tender coinage with an official denomination of 50 cents. Its silver and collectible value may exceed its stated denomination. United States coins remain legal tender under federal law.

Please review all photos carefully for wear, toning, marks and surface characteristics. Any handwritten information on the holder is not a professional grade, authentication or third-party certification.
