History of the Liberty Head Nickel
The Liberty Head Nickel, commonly known as the “V Nickel,” was produced for circulation from 1883 through 1912. The obverse features a classical portrait of Liberty surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original colonies. The reverse displays the Roman numeral “V,” meaning five, inside a decorative wreath.
When the series was introduced in 1883, the first coins did not include the word “CENTS.” Some were gold-plated and passed as five-dollar gold pieces, leading the United States Mint to add “CENTS” to the reverse later that year. This 1905 coin features the revised design.
The series was eventually replaced by the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. Liberty Head Nickels remain popular with collectors because of their historic design, affordable denomination and connection to late-19th- and early-20th-century American commerce.
