1902 Liberty Head V Nickel

This 1902 Liberty Head Nickel, commonly known as a V Nickel, is a classic piece of American coinage from the early 20th century. The coin features Lady Liberty on the obverse surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies.

The reverse features a large Roman numeral V, representing the coin's five cent denomination, surrounded by a wreath. This distinctive reverse is the reason collectors commonly call the series the V Nickel.

The Liberty Head Nickel was designed by Charles E. Barber and produced by the United States Mint from 1883 through 1913. One of the most interesting stories from the series occurred in its first year. The original 1883 design displayed the Roman numeral V but did not include the word CENTS. This led to stories of the coins being gold plated and passed off as $5 gold pieces. The Mint quickly modified the design by adding CENTS to the reverse.
