History of the 1865 Indian Head Cent

The Indian Head Cent was issued from 1859 through 1909. The obverse portrays Liberty wearing a feathered headdress rather than an actual Native American figure. The reverse displays “ONE CENT” inside an oak wreath topped by a Union shield. The United States Mint identifies the Indian Head design as the circulating cent type used during this period. (United States Mint)

This coin was struck during the final year of the American Civil War. The shield above the reverse wreath reflected themes of national unity, making the design especially meaningful for coins produced during the conflict.

By 1865, Indian Head cents were being struck in a lighter bronze alloy introduced during 1864. This replaced the thicker copper-nickel composition used on earlier small cents and made the coins easier and less expensive to manufacture. The bronze specifications included a weight of 3.11 grams and a composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc. (PCGS)

The 1865 issue is known with both Plain 5 and Fancy 5 date styles. Because this example is heavily worn and has not been professionally attributed, no specific date variety is guaranteed. (PCGS)

This coin was officially issued as United States legal-tender coinage with a denomination of one cent. Its collectible value is based on its age, historical significance, condition and numismatic demand.
