History of the 1864 Indian Head Cent

The Indian Head Cent was produced from 1859 through 1909. Its obverse depicts Liberty wearing a feathered headdress, while the reverse features “ONE CENT” inside an oak wreath topped by a Union shield.

The year 1864 was an important transition point for the series. Early coins were struck in a heavier copper-nickel alloy, while later examples were produced in a lighter bronze composition. Some bronze examples also feature a small “L” on Liberty’s ribbon for designer James B. Longacre.

Because this coin is heavily worn, its copper-nickel, bronze or “L on Ribbon” attribution cannot be confirmed from the photos and is not guaranteed. Accurate weighing and closer examination may be required.

Issued during the American Civil War, the reverse shield symbolized national unity. This coin was originally released as United States legal-tender coinage with a denomination of one cent, although its collectible value is based on age, condition, variety and historical significance.
