History of the Liberty Seated Half Dollar

The Liberty Seated Half Dollar was issued from 1839 through 1891. Its obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock while holding a shield and a liberty pole. The reverse features a heraldic eagle holding arrows and an olive branch. The design is credited to United States Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht and was based partly on artwork by Thomas Sully.

This example was struck in 1858 at the New Orleans Mint, which opened in 1838 to produce gold and silver coins near one of the nation’s busiest ports. The coin was made several years before the Civil War interrupted operations at the facility.

The 1858-O belongs to the earlier “No Motto” design because the reverse does not include “IN GOD WE TRUST.” That motto was added to the Liberty Seated Half Dollar later in the series.

This coin was officially issued with a denomination of 50 cents and remains United States legal-tender coinage, although its historical, collectible and silver value may exceed its denomination.
