History of the Liberty Seated Dime

The Liberty Seated Dime was produced from 1837 through 1891. Its obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock while holding a shield and liberty pole. The reverse of this earlier subtype features “ONE DIME” surrounded by a decorative wreath. 

The 1850-O was struck at the New Orleans Mint, which produced more than half a million dimes that year. Despite that production total, surviving examples can be considerably scarcer than the mintage might suggest, particularly in higher grades. 

This coin belongs to the Stars Obverse with Drapery subtype used from 1840 through 1860. The New Orleans “O” mintmark appears on the reverse below the wreath. Liberty Seated dimes from this period were struck from 90% silver and originally weighed 2.67 grams. 

This historic coin was issued with a denomination of 10 cents. United States coins are legal tender under federal law, although this coin’s silver and collectible value may exceed its stated denomination.
