By statute, all law enforcement agencies must auction seized, found, and unclaimed personal property at public auction. This was usually done in the parking lot of the local police station – this is the kind of police auction most people are familiar with. The bulk of those goods available cannot be returned to their legal owners, and the police are required to make the items available to the public for sale.
