The Gnomon...
An ancient Greek word that means "that which reveals," the gnomon has come to
be known as the blade that rises up from a sundial and casts the shadow to tell
the time. Constructing one of these archaic devices was considered an art form
with a gnomonist spending weeks or months to make his work as precise as
possible.
It's no wonder, then, that when Maurice Eberle wished to create his own watch
brand, he called it "Gnomon".
In a time when watches were being produced for a world soon to be at war,
Eberle was working feverishly in Switzerland to create innovative watch
movements. In 1916 he was granted a Swiss patent for one such movement and would
continue to elevate overall watch construction.
In 1918, Eberle and the Gnomon watch company would receive a patent for a
fastening device using greased friction for the wheel train on the cover of the
mainspring wheel. In that same year, he would also receive a patent for a
cutting edge watch bracelet closure.
By 1919, Gnomon was a well established brand for watch parts and
manufacturing. To reinforce their product, the company placed an ad for one
watch for which it stated that Eberle and Gnomon produced "high quality
horology". Gnomon soon became recognized for both incredibly small wristwatches
and large pocket watches with their own caliber movements, produced using the
technology covered by their own established Swiss patents.
Now 100 years later, the revolutionary ideals of Maurice Eberle and the
Gnomon watch company have been reintroduced with avant-garde designs and
movements, both inspired by the breakthroughs of this pioneering watchmaker. We
now present the Eberle Watch brand for a whole new generation to appreciate and
enjoy.
