Antique The Sportsman Cast Iron Mechanical Coin Bank Hunter Shooting Tree

Antique cast-iron “The Sportsman” mechanical coin bank featuring a kneeling hunter aiming a rifle toward a tree-style target/catapult mechanism.

This classic mechanical-bank design dates to the late 19th century and was patented in 1892. The original design depicts a sportsman shooting at a flying bird, with the mechanical action incorporating the hunter, spring/catapult mechanism and coin-deposit feature.

Your example features:

Long rifle with movable/mechanical components
Green painted base
Brown tree/trunk target section
Green vine and leaf decoration on the tree
Raised “THE SPORTSMAN” lettering along the base
Cast-iron construction
Multi-piece mechanical assembly

The paint shows substantial age and use, with chipping, scratches, rubs, oxidation and finish loss throughout. There is visible wear to the hunter, rifle, green base and tree section. The seams and mechanical components are visible as shown in the photographs.

The original Sportsman mechanism used a spring-loaded bird/pigeon arrangement. The bird was launched while the hunter turned and fired; the coin was deposited into the bank during the action.
