This 1988-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and has been certified by PCGS as MS65FS. The MS65 grade represents a high quality Mint State coin, while the FS designation stands for Full Steps, an important designation for collectors of Jefferson Nickels.

Full Steps refers to the steps at the base of Monticello on the reverse. These small lines are one of the most difficult areas of the Jefferson Nickel design to strike sharply. Coins with sufficiently complete, uninterrupted steps can receive the special Full Steps designation, making them particularly desirable to Jefferson Nickel collectors.

The Jefferson Nickel was introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo Nickel. Felix Schlag designed the coin with a portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and Jefferson's Virginia home, Monticello, on the reverse. This classic design remained a familiar part of American coinage for decades.
