1982-S Lincoln Memorial Cent Gem Proof RD
This 1982-S Lincoln cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a proof coin and is presented in a CoinHub holder with a Gem Proof RD designation. RD refers to the coin retaining its original red copper color.
The Lincoln cent was first introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. It was the first regular-issue U.S. coin to feature a real historical person. In 1959, the original Wheat reverse was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial design to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth.
1982 is an especially interesting year for Lincoln cents. During that year, the U.S. Mint transitioned the cent from its traditional bronze composition to a lighter copper-plated zinc composition because of rising copper costs. The 1982-S proof cent, however, was produced in the traditional bronze composition.
