1979-D Jefferson Nickel ICG MS66 FS Full Steps

This 1979-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint and has been certified by ICG as MS66 FS. The FS designation stands for Full Steps and recognizes an unusually strong strike on the steps of Monticello.

The Jefferson Nickel was introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo Nickel. Felix Schlag designed the original coin, featuring President Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his Virginia home, Monticello, on the reverse. This basic design became one of the longest-running designs in American coinage.

Full Steps Jefferson Nickels are especially interesting to collectors because the steps at the base of Monticello are one of the most difficult areas of the design to strike completely. Weakness, contact marks, or incomplete lines can prevent a coin from receiving the FS designation. This makes high-grade Full Steps examples a specialized area of Jefferson Nickel collecting.

This example received a Mint State 66 grade, indicating a high-quality uncirculated coin with strong overall eye appeal. It also carries the Full Steps designation.
