1891 Indian Head Cent

This 1891 Indian Head Cent is a genuine example of one of the most recognizable early American small cents. More than 130 years old, this coin was produced during a period of rapid industrial growth and expansion in the United States.

The Indian Head Cent was issued from 1859 through 1909 and was designed by James B. Longacre, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Despite its popular name, the portrait is not actually a Native American chief. The obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Native American style feathered headdress with LIBERTY displayed across the headband.

The reverse features the ONE CENT denomination surrounded by an oak wreath and topped by a Union shield. This reverse design was introduced in 1860 and remained largely unchanged for the rest of the series.
