South Sea Pearls are the rarest of all pearls and typically measure anywhere between 10mm to 20mm in diameter. South Sea Pearls sometimes, signifying any saltwater pearl found in the sea extending from the Philippines and Indonesia down to Australia and across to French Polynesia. Specifically, it refers to large white or yellow pearls cultured in a large oyster found in the South Sea-Pinctada maxima oyster.
Pearl Type:
When buying pearls, the first question you should ask yourself, is the pearl type. Is it a saltwater pearl (cultured in oceans, sea, gulf or bay) or freshwater pearl (from a river, lake or pond)? Akoya pearls can cost several times more than freshwater pearls of similar quality and size. One reason for this it that one mussel in a lake can produce as many as 40 freshwater pearls in one harvest season. An oyster in the sea usually produces one or two saltwater pearls at a time. Tahitian pearls, South Sea pearls and Akoya pearls are typical saltwater pearls, and generally cost more.
