 1994 Israel's "Biblical Art" Coin Series ~ The Bringing of Isaac

Throughout the ages, great artists have painted the famous stories of the Bible. The Biblical Art coin series will display some of these celebrated works. Each coin in the series will depict a different famous work of art.

Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the most important artists in 17th century Europe. His famous work, the "Binding of Isaac", had been chosen to appear on the first coin in the series. The painting dating from 1634 expresses the drama when Abraham held a knife to the neck of his son, as commanded by God. As Abraham readied to sacrifice his son, the Angel of the Lord appeared and ordered him to stop.

Description of the Coin

Front

Reverse

The denomination "1, 2 or 10" with "New Sheqel" or "New Sheqalim". At the left, the State emblem. "Israel" in Hebrew, English and Arabic. The year of issue 5754/1994 and the inscription, "1634 · Binding of Isaac · Rembrandt · Amsterdam" in Hebrew and English.

The uncirculated silver coin is mint-marked with a 6 pointed star at the bottom. The proof coins are mint-marked with a Hebrew 'mem'.
