Israel's Commemorative Coin Set Issued at the 50^th Anniversary of the Uprisings in the Ghettos and Concentration Camps

The Bank of Israel issued the 'Revolt & Heroism' Coin in honor and memory of those who raised the standard of revolt in Europe's valley of death 50 years ago. The uprisings record an amazingly courageous chapter in the history of the Jewish people. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising broke out on April 19, 1943 and had two fighting factions: The "Jewish Fighting Organization" (ZOB) consisting of 500 fighters and the "Jewish Military Union" (ZZV) made up of 250 fighters.

In later months organized Jewish fighting took place in the Ghettos of Kovno, Krakov, Zaglembie, Bialistok, Lachva and Tuchin. Daring uprisings of Jewish prisoners also broke out in the Treblinka and Sobibor extermination camps. In October of 1944 the forced Jewish laborers rebelled in the death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Most of these fighters lost their lives and it is most appropriate that their heroism be commemorated.

Description of the Coin

Front

Geometric shapes representing the walls of the camps and ghettos, and pointed pieces of barbed wire. In the center, a star of David breaks through the walls and the wire. Diagonal lines of dots, all in one direction, representing the bullets and fight towards one single goal. To the right, a flame symbolizes the heroism. "Revolt and Heroism" in Hebrew and English.

Reverse

The denomination "1, 2 or 10" in the center with the year of issue "1993/5753" in Hebrew and English around the rim. The State Emblem at the top. "Israel" in Hebrew, Arabic and English. The Proof coins mintmarked with a Hebrew 'mem' at the bottom.
