Description:  This North American native species is indigenous to Mexico where it is called Toloache and to the southwestern United States.  It was considered a plant of the Gods among Aztecs and other Indians and was used in both religious and ceremonial rituals.  As a landscape planting it can be either an angel or a devil, depending on its use and environment.  It can be troublesome and invasive in warm climates and as it is known to be toxic to both humans and livestock it should always be used with proper caution.  However, every plant has its purpose and devil's trumpet is no exception.  Plants are very fast growing making them exceptional for use as an annual planting in cooler climates.  Datura is quick to reach a height of five feet or more making them ideal for use as a temporary privacy screening or a quick filler plant for an unintersting area of the garden.  The large trumpet shaped blooms can span 6 or more inches in length and have an intoxicating fragrance which is strongest at night; the glistening white flowers also conveniently radiate under a moon lit sky.  The 4-6 inch long leaves are dark blue-green and have a fine pubescent covering.  Large green 'thorn apples' emerge in place of faded blooms; these break open to disperse seeds in late season and provide additional winter interest if plants are allowed to persist.  Datura's toxicity is a deterrent to both deer and insect predators, but does not seem to prevent dragonflies from basking in the sun on the blooms as shown in the second photo.

Uses:  Temporary privacy screening, large patio containers, mass planting, moonlight gardens, sunny beds and borders. Plants perform best in full sun but will tolerate some shade. Datura is easy to grow from seed and adapts well to a variety of soil types.  Plants will self-seed in ideal conditions in most temperate zones.  All parts of plant are toxic; use with caution particularly when children or animals are present.
