More about the Artist. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Joan Miro, considered both a surrealist and abstract artist, created most of his graphic works during the 1950s. His subject matter draws on the realm of memory and imaginative fantasy; dreamlike visions, typically whimsical or humorous. In his art, Miro often depicts playfully distorted animal forms, twisted organic shapes, and odd geometric constructions, placing it among the most original of the 20th century.
